ICN appoints a new Leader


The International Council of Nurses is pleased to welcome Mr Pierre Théraulaz as Acting Chief Executive Officer as of 1 August 2015.  Mr Théraulaz,an ICN Board member and President of the Swiss Nurses Association, will replace Dr David Benton until further notice. During this interim period, his role as ICN Board Member has been suspended.

Geneva, Switzerland; 29 June 2015-The International Council of Nurses
’(ICN)Board today announced that Dr David C. Benton has stepped down from his position as Chief Executive Officer effective 30 September 2015.

ICN Board member, Pierre Théraulaz, will act as interim CEO until a successor is appointed.

Dr Benton has served as CEO of ICN since 1 October 2008. Immediately prior to this he worked with ICN for three years as Consultant, Nursing and Health Policy, specialized in regulation, licensing and education.

Dr Benton will be taking up the position of CEO of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), a US not-for-profit organisation through which boards of nursing act and counsel together to provide regulatory excellence for public health, safety and welfare.

“I am grateful to have spent 10 years with ICN, and am proud of the work ICN has achieved during that time, “ said Dr Benton. “My role as ICN’s CEO has been challenging, exciting and at times difficult, but I have been honoured to have worked with some amazing people and to have had the opportunity to bring new members to ICN, including the Chinese Nursing Association and the Indian Nursing Council. I am looking forward to the new challenges which NCSBN will bring me.”

Dr Judith Shamian, ICN President said, “David has led ICN through some challenging times and we are grateful for his leadership over the past seven years. The ICN Board and I wish him lots of success in his future role as CEO of NCSBN.”
