The world World War 1 Commemoration was the recent ceremony which brought the whole world together to reflect on the lessons learned from the war which saw millions of lives wasted in brutal fashion. We are not going into the full details of the War, but Nurses Round is taking the world of nursing into the efforts, commitments and dedications showed by our fore-Nurses during this War.
Nurses fought without Guns, daggers or swords, but they were yet in the battle field and they gallantly defended their profession more within their only arsenal which is "CARE"
As always the case , Nurses duties and works may not be recognized or remembered, neighter has it won a noble award... but we are well aware that these nurses won the awards of honour being in the battle field without shields and also gave their lives for what they stood for. Report has it that about 400 US Nurses died on duty during the said War
Here are some Extracts from BBC Article on one of the most remembered Nurse of World War 1- Miss Edith Louisa Cavell .
Cavell expert Nick Miller said: "It's just incredible. Just as everyone else is trying to get out, with the German steamroller about to hit, she says 'I'm going back'.
"She sees her responsibilities - her Christian calling perhaps - as the nursing team, the college she has helped set up, and the fact there are likely to be wounded on both sides - and she goes back. That tells you a lot about her."
As well as treating wounds, Miss Cavell became part of an informal organisation that smuggled at least 200 allied soldiers into neutral Holland.
Mr Miller said: "She would have seen it as a necessary part of their care. If she just handed them over to the Germans they would have been thrown into a camp and left to fend for themselves.
"But the bravery required is mind-blowing. To shelter these men, take them to pick-ups, all under the noses of the Germans, is gallantry of the first order."
Knowing fully well she is not the only Nurse who passed away during this War, we take this time to reflect on what the profession meant to these nurses who sacrificed everything to ensure that Soldiers got the treatments they needed, that wounded persons were taken care of, that people were take to safe places.
These are all but the foundation of what our modern nursing stands for but Nurses Round suggests that this Miss Cavell needs to have a Nursing Scholarship on her name, a Nursing museum on her name, A day for her to be remembered and An award set pout internationally to be contested for.
We will forever remember her her as one of our own, honoured in death and in papers, but we need to give her a life time remembrance from interior*(internal) of Nursing Body.
Who knows if her spirit may give us the courage and fearless attribute we are seeking to have for some decades. The World had remembered the World War 1 they way it should be, now it time for the Nursing FAMILY to remember their heroes who fought with without a gun or shields, but with dedication to CARE! They were the true heroes of the War as far as Nursing is concerned.
